In my view, "energy independence" should be similar to "financial independence". Neither term describes an isolated person or country, but one that can make decisions without being beholden to any particular person or supplier.

An energy dependent country is one that must take its hat in hand and ask for others to meet its needs. An energy independent country can deal with other countries, trade where it makes sense for both parties and walk away when it does not make sense.

America has the technological resources to achieve energy independence in a connected world. We do not have to do it all on our own and with resources located solely within our own accidentally defined borders.
