Iran Running Out of Oil, Wants to Build More Nuclear Power Plants

Just the announcement that President-elect Obama wants to hear: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikholeslam wants Iran to build more nuclear power plants to provide electricity needs, rather than using oil and natural gas.

Iran will have oil for over 100 years but once its energy resources is depleted, nuclear energy will be the only logical substitute

Nuclear Weapon

Since there is significant concern in the West that Iran is attempting to build a nuclear weapon using its nuclear plants as a cover story, this news is certain to increase the pressure upon Obama to “do something” about Iran. While a war over nukes is not in the interests of either the United States or Iran, this will lead to higher tensions in a geopolitical region that is known for tense relationships.

Oil and Gas

With the world’s second largest proven oil and gas reserves, Iran stands to profit greatly from the increasing demand of oil and gas worldwide. In other words, the more electricity that Iran can generate from non-petroleum sources, the more oil and gas they can sell overseas.

Renewable Energy

As of 2006, only 7% of Iran’s electricity production was from hydro, and generated about 45 megawatts of electricity from wind power.

Sarah Palin on Energy: What a Switch!

Am I the only one who noticed that Sarah Palin has pulled a huge switchover when it comes to her take on energy policy?

Because it’s dramatic, and may presage the switch that I have been hoping for for a while: the divorce of the idea that a Conservative Environmentalist in politics is an oxymoron.
