After some early fooling about by others (including the Chinese) in previous centuries, the first true automobile was built by Richard Trevithic: the &quot;Puffing Devil&quot;, Cornwall, 1801. 
 
The first internal-combustion vehicle was built by Karl Benz: the &quot;Motorvagen&quot;, Germany, 1885. Benz patented the internal combustion engine in 1879. 
 
About 30 years later, Ford&#039;s assembly line (a refinement of an earlier line by Ransom Olds) was in full swing. Late to the party, Ford gets credit for bringing the price down and enabling commercialization -- but he was certainly not the inventor. </description>
