Rick, read it again. I didn't say that they were releasing Californian condors in the Andes. And the number of zoos involved in the Andean project came from the San Diego zoo, which says up to 24 zoos have captive bred Andean condors for release. The article has nothing to do with the CA project at all.

I'd suggest the writter go back and do some basic homework. The Andes Condor and the California Condor are two different birds. The California Condor is native to North America not just Califonia. The number of zoos participating in the CA Condor reintroduction program is very limited maybe San Diego, LA, Oregon, Idaho, Santa Barbara with 5 release sites: Arizona, Baja Mexico, Hopper Mountian, Big Sur and Pinnacles National Monument. Anyone want accurate information should do a Google search opposed to believing anything in this article.

Andes Condor has a 14 foot wing span vs 8.5 feet. The Andes Condor has a white ring around the base of the neck missing from the CA Condor.

I hope that they can do this for many other animals in the wild that are nearing extinction.

[...] The condor population in the Colombian Andes has doubled in recent years, thanks in part to the San Diego Zoo’s reintroduction program. Bonus: birds + birdwatchers=increased dollars for rural Colombian communities. (Hat tip: Red, Green and Blue.) [...]
