Chevron issued its Corporate Responsibility report this week. But it’s the stuff they leave out that takes this from a positive report card to an epic failure.
The good news: The oil giant claims to have done lots of awesome good stuff, including
- Achieved safest year in company history
- Reduced total energy consumption by 33 percent since 1992
- Increased social investment in communities to $197 million
- Spent $2 billion in small U.S. businesses
They also mention awesome international cooperation with Khazakstan, Indonesia and Nigeria.
Sounds great… except this is the same company that is pioneering new legal strategies in its bid to avoid paying to clean up the mess it made in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador.
They spent almost 20 years dragging the case out and dragging it from court to court.
Faced with an $8 BILLION judgement when they finally lost, they scooted back to New York (where the whole mess had started) and filed a novel lawsuit, accusing the LAWYERS who had fought and won the case for the indigenous tribes… with fomenting a ciminal conspiracy under the RICO act. (See: Chevron is at it again)
Understand? They don’t have to pay to clean up the once-pristine jungle, or help the native peoples who are dying of cancer, because their mean lawyers didn’t play nice with Chevron.
But hey, Chevron touts the $10 million they spent on social programs in the Niger delta… in the desperate hope that the desperate Africans they poisoned won’t see what the Ecuadorians did, and sue Chevron too.
