Romney panders to Iowa, changes mind on subsidies for renewables! (Sort of)

romney panders on wind energy in iowaSo, remember how Mitt Romney, the paragon of the free market, opposed subsidies for Wind Energy?

Subsidies that helped the budding industry created thousands of jobs? Subsidies that were a bipartisan effort by Midwest Republicans and clean-energy-loving Democrats?

Subsidies that, when Romney worked to block them, caused Iowa’s Republican Senator to say “Mitt Romney has stabbed us in the back”?

Well, with 11 days left before the election and Iowa tilting toward Obama… Romney went to Iowa and said “We’re going to support nuclear and renewables, but we’ll phase out subsidies once an industry is on its feet.”

Funny thing… nuclear has been around for 60 years but we still haven’t phased out the subsidies… but Republicans like their stuff big and centralized (at least when it comes to energy).

Note that he didn’t actually SAY he’d support the wind energy tax credit. But you know that’s what he hopes Iowans will hear – why else would he go to Iowa and say it?

And yet, he will be able to legitimately go to Washington and say “Actually, I never specifically said I support the wind energy tax credit.”

Unless we keep him from getting elected on November 6 and send him back to Massachusetts or California or whichever of his homes he feels like.
