Native American tribes want names of racist bigots stripped from Yellowstone National Park
The Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council, which represents all tribes in Montana and Wyoming, has been calling for the name changes since December 2014.
One is Mount Doane named for Gustavus Cheyney Doane. He was prominent in the first major U.S. expedition exploring Yellowstone. He was also a U.S. Army officer who participated in an 1870 massacre of a Blackfoot Confederacy camp in present-day Montana in 1870.
The other is Hayden Valley, named for Ferdinand V. Hayden, a geologist who called for the “extermination” of American Indians. Hayden, Colorado, and several mountain peaks are also named for him.
The U.S. tribes and Canadian First Nations want Mount Doane to be renamed First People’s Mountain and Hayden Valley renamed Buffalo Nations Valley.
