Why on earth is Donald Trump colluding with Russia? Yes, I said it — it’s collusion. Collusion in undermining our democracy and our liveable climate. Connect the dots between the Russia crisis and the climate crisis.

Putin doesn’t hide his embrace of Big Oil. In the infamous Helsinki press conference, one of the things he said about cooperation with the USA was “I think that we as a major oil and gas power, and the United States as a major oil and gas power, as well, we could work together on regulation of international markets.” That’s Putin-speak for more fossil fuel exports — and more climate chaos.
Putin’s regime is extremely dependent on export of fossil fuels to maintain the Russian economy and his popularity. If the world does what’s needed to rapidly decarbonize the economy, the Russian economy may well crash. Like most dictators, Putin doesn’t care about the long run health of the planet or its people. And wanna-be dictator Trump will keep embracing him, and Congressional Republicans will turn a blind eye to collusion.
We need to redouble our efforts to elect a Democratic Congress this fall filled with climate hawks who get the urgency of addressing climate change — and who can stand up to Trump and conduct the oversight investigations that Republicans won’t.
Today, Trump claimed that Russians are no longer targeting American elections. And if you believe that…
We can’t stop Russian interference — but we can vote out those who tolerate it. Roll up our sleeves. Raise our voices. Call and knock on doors for candidates who will stand up for our democracy and our climate. And yes, share our financial resources so that candidates who’ll hold Trump, Putin, and Big Oil accountable win this fall.
Obviously, we’re fans of justice and the Mueller investigation must run its course. But we can’t rely on the Mueller investigation or Republicans to suddenly gain a conscience to save us. Only the American people rising up at the ballot box and rebuking Trump can do so.
