Drain the Swamp: Trump begs TVA to stick with coal
Do you know John Prine’s song about Paradise, in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky? It was paradise until Mr. Peabody’s coal train hauled it all away. Long after the song protesting the horrors of strip mining made Paradise famous, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) realized that burning coal didn’t make any economic sense. Now it’s preparing to shut down the Paradise #3 coal plant, with a vote as early as this week.

Climate Hawks Vote
Until Donald Trump tweeted yesterday.
Coal is an important part of our electricity generation mix and @TVAnews should give serious consideration to all factors before voting to close viable power plants, like Paradise #3 in Kentucky!

These days the biggest supplier to the Paradise coal plant isn’t Peabody — it’s Bob Murray’s Murray Energy. The same Bob Murray that donated over $300,000 to Trump and his inauguration. The same Murray Energy that used to employ Andrew Wheeler as a lobbyist. The same Andrew Wheeler who’s now bringing his lobbying skills to run the Environmental Protection Agency as a division of Murray Energy.
Of course the leader of the country is trying to influence the TVA vote for the benefit of one rich donor, never mind the country. And of course he’s nominated Murray Energy’s lobbyist to run the EPA for the benefit of that exact same donor, for the exact same reason — so that Mr. Murray’s coal train can keep hauling it all away, never mind the Green River and the hills of Muhlenberg County and the lungs of all of us.
The only way we stop the destruction of Paradise is by all of us banding together and building a movement bigger than the coal barons.
