Climate Hawks Vote endorses Sara Gideon for Senate to unseat Susan Collins in Maine
Climate Hawk Democrats can flip the Senate by ousting Susan Collins, the endangered Senate Republican who tries to pretend that she’s moderate. Her moment in the national spotlight came in September 2018 when she defended Brett Kavanaugh and cast the deciding vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court, declaring that he would respect settled precedent on contentious issues such as abortion rights. Fast forward to June 29, 2020, when Kavanaugh didn’t.* So we’re endorsing Sara Gideon in Maine. Because Maine climate hawks told us to. Because Susan Collins. Because Brett Kavanaugh.

Climate Hawks Vote
Either Kavanaugh lied to Collins, in which case she has no business being in the Senate, or Collins lied to the American people, in which case she really has no business being in the Senate. Kavanaugh will be on the Supreme Court for decades.
Imagine what a far-right Court would do with Massachusetts vs. EPA, the finding requiring the EPA to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant. Imagine what’s going to happen to President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, or the cleaner cars litigation, or any of the dozens of EPA rollback cases wending their way through lower courts.
We asked Maine climate hawks which of the Democrats facing Collins we should endorse. They preferred, by a large margin, Sara Gideon, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. In her first term facing far-right Governor Paul LePage, she stood up to him. In her second term, with a friendlier governor, she pushed through even more progressive policies. On Tuesday Sara picked up the endorsement of the Bangor Daily News.*
Susan Collins has long been popular in Maine, but recent polls show a very close race. Control of the Senate hinges on Maine with Sara’s primary coming up on July 14. Sara has climate hawk credentials. She’s served on the statehouse Energy, Utilities, and Technology Committee, and in 2016 she brought Maine solar energy policy into the 21st century. Sara is the climate hawk we need in Maine–and for the rest of the country, too. I hope you can pitch in to support her.
Your fellow climate hawk (still nesting at home),
From Sara Gideon’s Website:
Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges we face — affecting everything from our public health to our economy. Our natural resources and environment have always been a core part of who we are and how we live in Maine. From our history and heritage to our economy today, stewardship of our woods and waters is deeply important to our livelihoods and our sense of place.
In Maine, Sara has been a champion for the environment and fighting against climate change. She passed the most aggressive goals the state has ever seen for reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy production, making Maine an example for states across the nation, and jumpstarting our clean energy economy and the good-paying jobs it brings. She also passed landmark legislation improving water quality protections for Maine’s tribes.
Taking bold and immediate action on climate change at the federal level is one of Sara’s top priorities. Sara is committed to:
- Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement;
- Investing in the clean energy economy;
- Setting aggressive goals to move to a completely clean energy system powered by renewables;
- Modernizing and upgrading our transportation and energy grid infrastructure;
- Overhauling our transportation system;
- Setting the carbon emissions reduction goals needed to slow climate change; and
- Ensuring that nominees to fill key environmental positions in the administration are qualified individuals who will work to protect our environment and fight climate change, not put the interests of the fossil fuel industry first.
Sara is proud to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters.
