Monsanto’s battle to get its genetically modified (GMO) corn into the European Union suffered a setback as the French Environment Ministry pushed the EU to implement a full ban, despite some agencies attempts to overrule it. Last November France’s high administrative court, the Conseil d’Etat, had ordered the ban lifted on one product, Monsanto’s MON 810 seed […]

We’ve written a lot about how Monsanto is one of the worst companies in the world, and how American farmers have taken them to court to try to block their actions that pollute the environment with chemicals and the food supply with genetically modified (GMO) seeds. Today we have word from France that the agribusiness […]
How bad is the revolving door between Monsanto and government? This handy chart (from geke.us) pretty much sums it up. Monsanto has been particularly talented at vacuuming up well connected ex-Congressmen, Senators and other government officials to go back and lobby the government, using their connections for the company’s benefit. And it also has been […]
You would think that a simple bill requiring the labeling of genetically modified (GMO) Frankenfish would pass easily through the California Legislature. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, since Assemblymembers apparently beholden to the bioegineering and biotechnology industry on January 19 voted against a bill, AB 88, that would have required that all genetically engineered (GE) […]
Monsanto’s genetically modified (GMO) corn is the crack cocaine of agriculture. It gives a great temporary high, but in the long term its just really, really, bad for you in all kinds of ways. How bad? The EPA says Monsanto’s corn is suffering severe damage from insects in four states. Which means their designer genes have […]
For the first time ever, scientists have uncovered the presence of infectious salmon anemia, a deadly virus that has devastated farmed fish in Chile, in wild salmon populations on the West Coast. This news arrived at a time when the Obama administration is fast-tracking the approval of genetically engineered Atlantic salmon, promoting environmental destructive corporate […]
In honor of World Food Day, I thought it was important to take a look at the issue of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). I’ve been asked why we’re writing so much about Monsanto and GMO.
I’m not a geneticist. If I say “We don’t know enough about this,” I’m just one guy. So I’ll let a geneticist answer those questions. But David Suzuki is one of the top geneticists in the world, and he says,
“Because we aren’t certain about the effects of GMOs, we must consider one of the guiding principles in science, the precautionary principle. Under this principle, if a policy or action could harm human health or the environment, we must not proceed until we know for sure what the impact will be. And it is up to those proposing the action or policy to prove that it is NOT harmful.”
Why are our tax dollars going to subsidize the creation of Frankenfish? It’s bad enough the government has totally failed to do any kind of regulation for genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including blocking attempts to at least mandate labeling for these artificial and barely-tested foods .
But why on earth should taxpayers have to subsidize the hugely-profitable companies that are developing them?
By Ken Roseboro, editor of The Organic & Non-GMO Report (From our sister-blog, Eat Drink Better) Internal US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) documents reveal that the agency’s own scientists expressed doubts about its policy toward labeling genetically modified foods, while raising questions about the foods’ safety. The FDA’s policy toward genetically modified foods has been […]
For two decades, Monsanto has been able to take living organisms, insert genes into them, and then patent them as its own intellectual property. And nobody has challenged this – until now.
The government of India has filed suit against Monsanto – for violating India’s Biological Diversity Act (BDA). It’s the first time a company has been sued by a government for acts of biopiracy.
If you’ve been following the issue here at RGB, you’re aware of the fact that the US Department of Agriculture is full of former Monsanto employees and assorted hangers-on who have been doing their best to make it easy for their former (and likely future) employer’s genetically modified (GMO) crops to get approval. But this latest development blows the doors off what has happened so far.
A new report by some top scientists has nailed it down, and Monsanto isn’t going to be happy. The Agri-giant has built its entire business model, including genetically modified (GMO) crops that dominate the US market, around its Roundup brand herbicide.
They last thing they want to admit is that it causes birth defects.
But that’s just what a group of scientists from a diverse group – including Cambridge University, the King’s College London School of Medicine, and the Institute of Biology, UNICAMP, São Paulo, Brazil – have found.
You must have seen this one coming. When the USDA approved Monsanto’s gene-modified (GMO) alfalfa back in January, the Big Ag party line was that Organic producers had nothing to worry about. There was just not that much risk of contamination. Now, barely two months later, stories like this one are being seeded in the […]
By Cassandra Anderson (from Morph City) Phil Geertson is a conventional alfalfa seed grower who has been involved in efforts to stop GE (genetically engineered) alfalfa since 2003 resulting in a Supreme Court decision in 2010 on Forage Genetics/Monsanto’s GE alfalfa. Mr. Geertson began his career as a Registered Civil Engineer but later changed his […]
