Action: GOP doubles down on screwing Detroit, hybrid cars
The GOP has worked out its preferred recipe for victory next year: Screw everyone. If they block every attempt to create jobs and make the country a better place, maybe, just maybe, they can beat President Obama.
Yesterday, they tried to screw Detroit automakers, and kill tens of thousands of jobs, by robbing Peter ( a LOAN PROGRAM that helps car companies retool factories to make hybrid cars) to pay Paul (fund FEMA, which has run out of money for disaster relief in the face of Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee, as well as victims of the wildfires in Texas).
They lost – voted down by a strange-bedfellows alliance of Tea Partiers, non- TP Republicans, and nearly every Democrat in the House (See: Fail: House GOP’s disastrous budget bill is voted down)
The Senate has already passed a clean, apolitical bill, and with a government shutdown looming next week, it looked like the sane option would be for the House to just pass the Senate version with bipartisan support from Democrats and non-ideologue Republicans.
But that would be too simple.
Today, House Speaker John Boehner doubled down. He’s keeping the “screw Detroit” provision, adding a “Remind them that Solyndra failed” provision, and is strong-arming the Tea Partiers who voted against the measure yesterday.
He’ll try to bring this dog to a vote tonight.
UPDATE: Early Friday morning Boehner won back half his wayward GOPers, and with 6 clueless Democrats helping, he passed the bill. Now he says he’ll adjourn the House for a week – in effect saying to the Senate and the Democrats, “No compromise, no negotiation, you pass our bill or we shut down the government and blame you!”
Get that? While whining that the Democrats were “playing politics” by voting against the bill, Boehner is acting in a totally political, grandstanding manner.
Fail, fail, fail.
With the Tea Party consistently refusing to vote for any budget deals, you’d think Boehner would have figured out by now that he needs to bring forward bills that will win Democrats support. But nope. He’s gone the opposite way, getting more and more intransigent.
Tennessee Representative Jim Cooper commented, “[Republicans] don’t have to poke us in the eye.”
The Conservative Chamber of Commerce worked hard to elect these clowns last year, only to have them come back and bite them in the ass. In a letter to Senators, the Chamber praised the auto-loan program, saying it “promotes manufacturing in the U.S. and is an important component of America’s energy security.” But that didn’t stop Boehner from taking a chainsaw to it.
“We’re watching the Tea Party shut-down movie for the third time this year,” said Illinois Senator Dick Durbin. “The American people are fed up with this strategy.” Maybe that’s why the House GOP currently has an abysmal 72 percent disapproval rate…
