Election 2012: Mitt’s Last Stand
Sure, national polling is close, with only a slight edge for Obama becoming apparent in recent days. However, the electoral college – that archaic remnant of the early days of our Union – not so much. Romney looks to have a depressing Tuesday night ahead of him. At least, if you believe that thousands of individual polls aggregated together to eliminate outliers and smooth out noise can be trusted.
Even worse, there was Obama, “palling around” with, until quite recently, partisan firebrand NJ Governor Chris Christie (watch him make Fox and Friends look even stupider). And then, endorsements by Republican figureheads like Michael Bloomberg and Colin Powell (again).
Desperation smells a lot like fear, and fear and lying go hand-in-hand. Which leads us to Mitt Romney’s closing arguments: if you can’t beat ‘em, lie your ass off and see what sticks!!
- Obama is sending your jobs to China: Unless you live under a rock, you know that the Romney Campaign (NOT a shadowy group of undisclosed donors) produced a widely distributed commercial suggesting that because of Obama, the auto company Chrysler is moving its operations to China (not true). The ad also sinisterly narrated that Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy”…err, yes, which is exactly what Romney recommended, the difference being that Obama then extended a government-backed bridge loan to both companies that completely turned around their fortunes, while Romney thought that was a terrible idea (oops). So, Romney is now the auto industry’s friend and Obama is its imminent doom. Unfortunately, GM and Chrysler strongly disagree. And when the spokesman for large American corporations publicly call a Republican presidential candidate a liar…well, you’ve got yourself a problem.
- Obama wants you to vote out of revenge: In the Republican’s ongoing strategy of drumming up faux outrage by cherry-picking of out-of-context phrases from Obama’s speeches and interviews to drum up fake controversy (i.e., the infamous ”you didn’t build that”, where Obama expressed his hatred for the small business owner? You say you haven’t heard it lately? Interesting…), Romney’s latest line of BS is that Obama is urging his supporters to vote out of “revenge” (At a recent rally, when discussing the sad litany of actions the republicans in congress had taken to prevent the nation from progressing, remarked that “voting is the best revenge”. I mean, can you just imagine?) Said Mitt over the weekend: “Vote for revenge? Let me tell you what I’d like to tell you: Vote for love of country.” Wow, what a guy, right
- Suppress the vote!!! We all know that the more people vote, the more likely Democrats are to win. Hence the Republican’s all out war against voter “fraud”: an unbelievably disingenuous bogeyman, that has given media legitimacy and legislative priority to a nationwide campaign of discriminate voter suppression and intimidation in a multitude of states where Republicans control the legislature. Jumping on the bandwagon, the Romney campaign’s training for its “poll watchers” included, in Iowa, instructions to be on the lookout for anyone allowed to vote without a photo ID and then report them to the legal team (NOTE: photo ID is NOT required to vote in Iowa). Similarly, the Wisconsin training materials were filled with inaccuracies that could slow voting and intimidate legal voters. Its not enough that people who have voted legally for decades are now being prevented from voting in their home states. Even where such laws aren’t on the books (or have been reversed or invalidated by courts), Republicans want you to think there are.
- Obama will destroy us all!!! Paul Ryan, addressing Ralph (“When the government helps the poor, it takes away our liberty”) Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition, said Obama’s “dangerous path” that “compromises those values, those Judeo-Christian, Western civilization values…It just puts a chill down my spine.” BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID. Yes, its unbelievable the horrors that the Obama presidency has inflicted on our values: health care for children, higher fuel efficiency standards, ending the war in Iraq, expanded lending to small businesses, rescuing the auto industry…the horror…
Ahhhhh…the death throes of a campaign in free-fall. Its painful to watch.
Then again, its not Mitt’s fault. Its nature!! Republicans are already preparing their strongest talking point for Wednesday (or, more likely, Tuesday night): if it hadn’t have been for that dang hurricane, Mitt would have won this thing! Lousy nature…always keeping a good man down.
Where the true blame lies is with the Republican party. Fear, selfishness, and intimidation do not make for a strong, unifying message.
