SOTU Republican response by Cathy McMorris Rodgers

The daddy party had mom come out and talk to us tonight in the first (of 3!) GOP responses.

There was just one problem with the wonderful vision of an America in which everyone would do great if we all just worked hard and government got out of our way…

The GOP has been trying that same snake oil for the past 30 years. If it was going to work, it would have worked during Reagan. It would have worked during Bush I. It would have worked during the years when the GOP controlled the White House and both Houses of Congress.

But the truth is, wages are down, unemployment is up, and tens of thousands of West Virginians still don’t have clean drinking water.

And while she (naturally) invoked the GOP bogeyman of “unprecedented spending, higher taxes, and fewer jobs”… that’s nothing more than a bogeyman and everyone outside the GOP echo chamber knows it. Spending is flat, taxes are lower than in decades, and as for fewer jobs… every economist who is not in the GOP has been saying for the past 5 years, “If you cut spending this much, you will have week job growth.”

Well, guess what? The GOP got their spending cuts… and now they’re looking around and saying “Gee, why is there weak job growth? OBAMA’S plan isn’t working… you have to give US more of OUR plan…”

And what’s their plan?

There is no plan. There is nothing specific in what you are about to see/read but platitudes about “cutting spending”, “cutting taxes,” and “getting government out of the way so the magic market fairy can give us all good-paying jobs.”
